EarthWeb’s Networking Channel has added a site devoted to networking news. Launched last week, Open Networks Today provides a frequently updated snapshot of networking headlines tailored to professionals in the field.
EarthWeb Networking Channel Executive Editor Dan Muse said the site’s primary value will come from relying on editorial staff instead of automated keyword searching.
“Based on the success of Jupitermedia’s Linux Today, we know that readers appreciate the value that comes from real, live editors reviewing articles from across the Web.”
Open Networks Today also features a number of customization options for registered members, including the ability to prioritize stories by category, receive e-mailed alerts on specific topics and filter out stories with subjects of less interest.
“By visiting Open Networks Today and taking a few moments to set their preferences, visitors can be confident that they getting the most in-depth articles on the topics they care about the most. They don’t have to worry about searching the Web — we do that for them,” said Muse.
Muse also noted that site features designed to encourage reader community participation will make the site more valuable to visitors.
“Our approach allows members to add comments and reactions to breaking news. It combines the benefits of aggregators, forums and blogs into a one-stop shop for network professionals.”
Open Networks Today Managing Editor Michael Hall’s first assignment with Jupitermedia came in the company’s Linux/Open Source Channel in 2000, where he worked as the managing editor of several sites, including LinuxToday and LinuxPlanet. He moved from the Linux/Open Source Channel to Jupitermedia’s EarthWeb division, where he’s the current managing editor of Enterprise Networking Planet and Instant Messaging Planet.
