Atlassian announced on Jan. 9 that it is acquiring collaboration platform Trello in a deal valued at $425 million. The deal includes approximately $360 million in cash with the remainder in Atlassian shares and is expected to closed by March 31.
Trello has emerged in the last five years to become a popular application platform for helping organizations manage teams and collaboration.
“Our small idea was to take the paradigm of a sticky note on a wall and turn it into a tool that allowed people to collaborate in real time,” Trello CEO Michael Pryor wrote in a blog post. “More than 19 million users later, Trello is used by everyone from the family planning their next vacation to employees at the largest enterprises in the world.”
Pryor expect that as part of Atlassian, Trello will become “…even more awesome and more fun than it is today.” Trello will continue to operate as a standalone service, while integrating with the Atlassian platforms, including HipChat for communcations, Confluence for content and JIRA for enterprise project tracking. Atlassian’s technologies are already widely used by development teams in over 65,000 organizations.
“Atlassian’s mission is to unleash the potential in every team. That’s a big mission,” Mike Cannon-Brookes, cofounder of Atlassian, wrote in a blog post. “In Trello we found a group that is as dedicated to helping teams get stuff done as we are.”
Cannon-Brookes said Trello will become an important part of the Atlassian portfolio, providing a fun way for teams to organize what can often be a messy assortment of disconnected information. He added that the Trello card system, which is the basis for how it helps organization to collaborate and organize information, is an intuitive system that becomes ‘instantly familiar’ to new users.
Full details on the Atlassian-Trello deal are expected to be detailed on Atlassian’s second quarter fiscal 2017 earnings conference call, which is scheduled for Jan. 19.
