Taiwan- and San Jose Calif.-based IPEVO this week announced immediate availability of its new WiFi Skype Desktop Phone S0-10W. Like its sibling, the mobile S0-20 WiFi Phone for Skype (see our review), the S0-10W has all of Skype’s phone functionality built into its firmware, so Skype calling is not tethered to a computer.
It does, of course, require connection to an IP network, but, thanks to the included Wi-Fi adapter, the phone can be set up and operated anywhere within the range of an 802.11b/g Wi-Fi access point (AP). The only other requirement is AC power. Like its mobile sibling, the S0-10W supports WEP, WPA, and WPA2 security.
IPEVO’s “no cables necessary” sales slogan is only half true, however, as the Wi-Fi adapter is cabled to the phone itself. Moreover the phone can, optionally, be cabled into the LAN, and a fast Ethernet switch or pass-though is provided to share the LAN connection with a PC or other device.
The sleekly designed phone is roughly 7 ½ inches deep by 6 ½ inches wide by 2 ½ inches tall. It features a full color 2.4-inch screen, and a full array of Skype navigation and command keys, in addition to a standard telephone keypad. Experienced Skype users will intuitively ‘get’ the interface.
Supplementing the main console are three speed dial keys, a mute button, a redial key, and a speakerphone key for hands-free conversation. The full-duplex speakerphone features built-in echo cancellation.

The WiFi Skype Desktop Phone has a corded handset and feature full duplex audio using the analog-to-digital G.729AB codec. While the company claims “amazing sound quality,” this is not a wideband phone.
Users can dial outgoing Skype-to-Skype calls from the Skype Contacts and outgoing SkypeOut calls either from the Contacts list or using the dialpad. (SkypeOut calls require SkypeOut credit.)
Note, however, that all SkypeOut calls must be in Skype’s approved format – which includes two leading zeros and the country code. Most users will want to put frequently called numbers into their Contacts directory.
Incoming Skype-to-Skype calls will ring the phone, as will incoming SkypeIn calls. (SkypeIn service uses a leased ‘direct inward dialing’ (DID) number to allow people on the PSTN to reach your Skype phone.)
IPEVO’s WiFi Skype Desktop Phone S0-10W is available for $169.99, exclusively at the IPEVO store.
