Global Crossing Crosses into Hosted IP Voice Services

Global Crossing has launched a new hosted VoIP service, targeted at resellers and service providers. The new service was developed with communications software-provider partner TeleWare PLC of the UK, which is where the service will be initially available.

Hosted IP Voice (the service’s official title) is being offering in a four different service configurations, depending on customer needs. The common features include the usual suspects: caller ID, web-accessible voice mail, web management interface, soft phone client, and geographical direct dial inwards.

The new solution is anticipated to hit a sweet spot in the market as companies add new office and/or remote workers. “A lot of companies don’t want to make the CAPEX outlay when they are bringing on a new site,” Global Crossing spokesperson Robin Brown told “It’s becoming increasingly expensive for companies to bring individuals and new sites on.”

Global Crossing is positioning its solution as a cost effective way for companies to use IP Voice without the need for capital outlay. As well they are claiming the service will fully integrate with a company’s legacy PBX system and extend it with additional IP features.

Global Crossing is also giving users the choice of network access to Hosted IP Voice as well. Choices include IP VPN, DSL or the Internet. “If a customer comes to us and is looking for an end to end solution then we run it as a VPN over our MPLS network,” Brown explained. He added that secure connections could also be made though Global Crossing session border controllers.
