Recent research reports from both Gartner and IDC agree that sales of smartphones—which among other functionalities allow users to place VoIP calls and thus save significant money on phone minutes—are booming. In fact they’ve outstripped earlier predictions and will exceed last year’s sales by more than 50 percent.
The IDC report, Worldwide Quarterly Phone Tracker, further predicts that market share ranking will do some significant shifting, with Google’s Android the big winner—moving from a little over 16 percent this year to nearly 25 percent by 2014—and Symbian the big looser—dropping by some 10 percent but remaining top dog with over 30 percent total share.
