Citrix Debuts New Carrier-Grade Netscaler ADC

Citrix is expanding its Netscaler Application Delivery Controller (ADC) product portfolio with the introduction of the new MPX 25000 series appliances.

The MPX 25000 series is a two rack-unit (2RU) box with up to 32 x 10 GbE ports and is powered by dual Intel E502680v2 processors. There are two new models in the series, including the MPX 25160T and the MPX 25100T. The MPX 25160T has a system throughput of up to 160 gigabits per second, which can enable up to 4.6 million layer 7 HTTP requests per second. The MPX 25100T provides up to 100 Gbps of system throughput and can support up to 3.2 million Layer 7 HTTP requests per second. The MPX 25160T can be clustered to provide up to 3.5 Tbps of capacity.

Mikko Disini, director, product management, NetScaler at Citrix, told Enterprise Networking Planet that the NetScaler MPX 25000 is a new series and does not replace an existing appliance in the Citrix portfolio.

“It is a carrier-grade ADC for communications service providers, featuring Citrix TriScale technology and the industry’s highest performance-to-price ratio,” Disini said.

Citrix first started talking about its TriScale technology in 2012 alongside the Netscaler 10 release. TriScale enables clustering and other advanced scalability features for the Netscaler. Disini noted that the MX 25000 runs the existing and same NetScaler software release that runs in all the other platforms.

With TriScale, Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is also a key use case. The MPX 25000 can scale up to support up to 80 virtual ADC instances.

“As operators shift towards NFV, they’re shifting to the cloud,” Disini said.

One of the other key features that is enabled on the NetScaler MPX 25000 series is Carrier Grade Network Address Translation (CGNAT), which is becoming increasingly important as IPv4 address space continues to dwindle. The MDX 25000 CGNAT can support up to 256 million concurrent sessions.

“CGNAT support is for IPv4 preservation,” Disini said. “Its primary use case is large scale private IP4 to pubic IPv4 network address translation.”

The NetScaler MPX 25000 is set to become generally available on March 16.
