What is the Future of Citrix Netscaler? [VIDEO]

At the core of Citrix’s networking product portfolio is the Netscaler product family. Over the years, Netscaler, much like the needs of the networks it serves, has changed and evolved.

In a video interview with Enterprise Networking Planet, Sunil Potti, VP and GM for the Netscaler product group at Citrix, detailed the direction that Netscaler is now taking as an Application Delivery Controller (ADC) platform.

“You now use an ADC or a Netscaler in front of every tier of your applications,” Potti said. “Netscaler has moved from being just a web front-end for scaling, to an app and database front-end, and that has occurred over the last few years.”

Potti noted that application security and policy are needed across web, desktop and mobile devices, which is why the Netscaler is finding a home as a unified gateway. He added that Netscaler is now evolving further into a service delivery platform.

Back in 2008, in the early days of Netscaler, Citrix partnered with content delivery network (CDN) provider Akamai. Now in 2014, Potti said there really isn’t as much need to align with a CDN as there once was.

“I think that the IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) providers actually have a better footprint to extend their compute cloud all the way to the content delivery cloud,” Potti said.
