David Koretz sold his security company Mykonos to Juniper Networks in 2012 for $80 million. At Juniper, he has continued on with the same mission, and with the same core group of people, too.
Koretz is now the VP of Products and General Manager for the Counter Security Group at Juniper. In a video interview with Enterprise Networking Planet, Koretz explained what his mandate is at Juniper and where he sees the next wave of innovation for network security.
“The Counter Security Group is all of Juniper’s really forward-looking, next-generation technologies,” Koretz explained.
One of the first things that Koretz did when he joined Juniper was to figure out how to redefine data center security. He determined that web application security and DDoS protection were key attributes. The other key factors lie in the ability to determine specifically who is behind an attack.
Koretz noted that Juniper now has the ability to detect an attacker at the Web App Secure layer and then automatically push policy to a Juniper SRX gateway to protect against the threat.
New hardware boxes are not Koretz’s focus. The network is evolving, and the goal is now to get security across a wide variety of deployment types.
“I don’t spend a lot of my energy thinking about where the technology lives,” Koretz said. “My focus is on capabilities – how do I get really good security deployed, versus how do I get a box.”
